Pruning and Shaping

Crown reductions aim to reduce the overall size of a tree, whilst maintaining its natural shape. Usually this is done when a tree has become disproportionately large or too dominant for its situation, to rebalance a crown, or to enable more light into a garden or home. Age and species affect how a tree might tolerate a reduction pruning.

Crown thinning enables the density of the tree’s canopy to be reduced, by selectively removing internal branches. The overall shape and size of the tree is retained. This is typically done to allow more daylight through the tree, or to lessen wind resistance; thereby reducing the likelihood of the tree suffering wind damage.

Crown lifting involves removing lower branches from the crown of the tree, and is often carried out in order to improve light levels, to enhance a view, or to enable better pedestrian or vehicle access beneath the canopy.

Felling and Dismantling

The felling and removal of trees demands specialist expertise and equipment.

Traditional felling techniques can be applied to smaller trees and when a tree is within sufficient space. Often though trees are in close proximity to buildings, fences, other trees and gardens, and will need to be removed carefully, using sectional dismantling procedures.

Stump Removal

After a tree has been felled it will generally leave a stump close to ground level. Stumps can be removed by using either herbicide or stump grinding. Systemic herbicide is a non-persistent and environmentally friendly herbicide that will kill the stump and any underground roots. It will not affect the soil or nearby vegetation, and the treated stump will decay into the soil over a period of time. For instant stump removal, we can grind the stump to below ground level with a stump grinding machine. This leaves behind a mixture of soil and sawdust which can then be turfed, seeded or replanted.
